Potato forks

Potato forks are designed for digging out your potato crop. Their wide, flat tines minimising bruising of the tubers compared to a conventional thinner tined fork. Most commonly found with four tines, less often three and rarest of all the five tine pattern. They can also be known as 'spading forks' and used in place of a spade for soil cultivation, especially soils with a high clay content. When moist these soils are invariably sticky and annoyingly stick to spade blades making the work a lot harder. From experience as a professional gardener, it is far easier to work this type of soil with a fork which enter the soil with less resistance and are less likely to 'clog' up with sticky clay soil. I have also heard of them being used as bait forks. In other words digging lugworms out of the beach sand for bait. An old illustration of the right and wrong way to lift potatoes is included in each items' photographs. This is taken from: Sudell, R. Practical gardening and food production, Odhams Press Ltd, London. Date of publication unknown. The photos also include a tape measure to give the dimensions and overall length of the item.
